One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, your partner or another woman is the gift of having experienced labor support throughout the birth of her baby. Having a strong hand from another woman can statistically shorten your labor and greatly enhance the experience not only for the mother, but for all those attending the birth. I am that very woman you need...
my name is Tina and I am a doula.
The word "doula" is from the greek meaning "a woman who serves". A doula is simply a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. The role of the doula is never to take the place of the father or partner during a woman's labor, but to compliment and strengthen them during this precious event giving them calm support throughout, whether you choose a hospital birth or an at home birth.
As your birth doula we will meet to discuss all the details and I can answer any questions you may have about myself or the process of birth and help you find local resources and childbirth education classes. My desire is to encourage all your personal birth choices, and can even suggest other options that you may not be aware of, so you can plan your birth fully informed as we draw up your birth plan. I will be available to accompany you to a prenatal exam if needed during the last few weeks before your due date, and will be on call for any unresolved issues or questions.
I can be help at your home birth working with your midwife and family to give you strength and attention. At the hospital, being trained in all aspects of that environment and having experience and knowledge about interventions that may come up, I can give you the advocacy needed to navigate your birth. I am experienced in helping many moms attain a successful VBAC providing the needed strength and encouragement to get you your trial of labor! I am truly a woman for all seasons and will help in any and every way to make the birth of your child an unforgettably better experience.
As the labor process begins I will await your call to rush to your side. During labor I will be your constant support using techniques to comfort you, and will go through each contraction with you doing all I can to help you with a gentle voice and a strong hand! I always have ideas and am trained to help with things like back labor pain, fetal positioning, and activities to speed your labor along. You can be assured that I will walk through this journey with you to continually strengthen your confidence and keep you focused all during labor. Then, I will remain after your birth to see you recover and bond with your new baby, trained and ready to help with breast feeding techniques and that first latch. I will provide you with information and suggestions concerning feeding issues and draw up a newborn care plan with you. I will stay by your side and help you feel more completely supported and pampered until we say goodbye! We will then visit at your home once during the first week after birth to check on your recovery and your baby's progress. Then we can "de-brief" as we talk through your birth story, and I can observe any areas that need to be addressed in your recovery process.
I now work in Orlando, Florida and all surrounding areas and am ready to commit to serving the needs of you and your family for the birth of your child. I am certified with DONA International which is the gold standard among Doula organizations (Sibling Doula services are now available too). I have also trained with Gail Tully of Spinning Babies and can now bring the very best techniques to your pregnancy and birth to encourage optimal fetal positioning. Having trained under Gena Kirby, I can provide excellent pain relief and relaxation with the use of the Rebozo and loving touch as an Essential Oil Consultant...this is extremely helpful between weeks 38 to 42+ while waiting to go into labor so consider trying an essential oils massage session with me!
Having a Doula can maximize your success in having the most natural childbirth possible. My heartfelt goal is to provide continuity of care and be of service in all your birthing and newborn needs so that you and your family can really, truly experience this incredible moment in time, and I will use everything that I have learned to ease your mind, relax your body, and keep your spirits high...
So let me be your Doula and I will give you my strong hand with a joyful heart!
"Tina Harris assisted my midwife before, during, and after the home water birth of my daughter. From the first time I met her, I felt that she was deeply there to help me. From massaging lavender oil on my feet, to using the rebozo to combat some pretty intense ligament pain, she very much made me feel that she was on my side. Her moment to most brightly shine for me was during the intense end of my labor. She seemed to intuitively anticipate my needs and support me in a way that was gentle and encouraging. I leaned heavily on the strength she offered and got to meet my daughter feeling like an overcomer. I think about my birth very fondly and I genuinely believe that her presence there was a tremendous gift!" -Julie
"How much is a doula worth? She is priceless!
My bundle of joy is now 6 months old. He is my first child and it has always been a desire of mine to deliver vaginally and non-medicated. Tina Harris helped make this possible for me. Ironically, she was not our original doula. The doula we developed a relationship with had an unexpected traumatic birthing experience with a client just the night before. So, Tina became our “impromptu” doula. We were more than convinced that we had struck gold! By the time she arrived, I was being pumped with Pitocin (aghhhh! Awful stuff). Tina jumped in with both feet and before I knew it, I was leaning on her (literally) like she was my long-time BFF. She made me feel so at ease with her; I felt like I had known her forever.
Due to my Pitocin drip, my labor was pretty amplified, to say the least. However, I was determined to not take pain medication such as the all too commonly used epidural. She helped make this possible by leading me into birthing ball exercises, massaging pressure points with essential oils, making sure my breathing pattern was controlled and working hand in hand with my husband. There was even one crucial period when the nurse informed us that my son was in the anterior position (face up). This would make it very difficult to birth him vaginally. My doctor was even suggesting a C-section! Tina calmed me down and led me into specific body movements and rotations that nudged my baby into the right position. I delivered vaginally without medication within 9.5 hours of going into labor. And if you need any more convincing of how much you will benefit from hiring a doula, I gave birth to a 9.4 lbs baby!
So, how much is a doula worth? She’s worth more than you possibly can imagine. My husband and I highly recommend Tina as a trusted doula and friend:)" -Mishka
